Keep Hardin County Beautiful (KHCB) recently created a new award category to recognize the exceptional efforts behind Dunkirk Field of Honors war memorial. The inaugural Outstanding Park Award was presented to the Village of Dunkirk Council in appreciation of its vision, dedication, and commitment to honoring local veterans.

KHCB member Ron Smith strongly advocated recognizing this remarkable park, inspiring the organization to establish the new award category. The park stands as a shining example of a community working together to achieve a meaningful goal: creating a place that honors the men and women of Dunkirk and the surrounding area who served their country with courage, sacrifice, and distinction.

Located in the heart of Dunkirk along State Route 68, the park is a landmark that many travelers have noticed in passing. Its most prominent feature is the large military tank, which was relocated from Dunkirk Park five years ago and now serves as the centerpiece of the memorial. Equally impressive are the beautifully designed benches, memorial columns, and veterans’ flags that proudly line the park. Visitors cannot help but feel humbled as they reflect on the names of those who served and the sacrifices made for both their country and their hometown.

The Dunkirk Village Council developed the park’s design and transformed those ideas into a lasting addition to the community. The memorial’s appearance is further enhanced by patriotic flower displays that are lovingly maintained by village employees and council members throughout the year.

KHCB was honored to be joined by council members, supporters, and community members during the award presentation. We sincerely thank everyone involved for their hard work and dedication in creating this memorable tribute. The Dunkirk Military Park is a source of pride for Hardin County and a reminder of the people and values that make the community a great place to call home.
