Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

Nearly 3000 people were killed when hijacked planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Virginia.

A fourth plane crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after the passengers were alerted about the previous attacks and attempted to take control, which forced the hijackers to crash the plane.

The first plane struck the first tower at 8:46 that morning, the second at 9:03.

The Pentagon was struck at 9:37, and the plane crashed near Shanksville at 10:03 that morning.

At Ground Zero, the traditional reading of names of each victim will resume this year at the 9/11 Memorial in New York.

The names will be read by family members of the 2,983 people killed on 9/11.
