The date has been set to begin the process of demolishing the old Surplus Building in downtown Kenton.

City Law Director John Schwemer said the first steps are scheduled to start on Monday May 5, but that is subject to approval of the State Demolition Permit by the Environmental Protection Agency.

He said actual demolition may take a couple of days after that date, as the first day will be removal of some windows and other items that may contain asbestos.

Hardin County Common Pleas Court Judge Steve Christopher found in favor of the city’s efforts to declare the property a nuisance pursuant to Kenton’s codified ordinance in a Court ruling from late January this year.

Owner David Rigdon was given until early May to demolish the building at his expense.
