Governor DeWine Announces $72 Million to Upgrade Roadway Safety

(COLUMBUS, Ohio)—Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Director Pamela Boratyn yesterday announced details on 33 transportation projects that will improve roadway safety in 23 counties across the state.

The safety projects are funded with $72 million from ODOT’s Highway Safety Improvement Program, the largest safety program in the country based on per capita spending.  “Every life lost on our roadways is one too many,” said Governor DeWine. “These projects target the types of crashes that are most likely to result in death or serious injury. By investing in proven safety countermeasures, we’re making our transportation system safer for everyone.”

The awards include 13 intersection safety projects totaling $46.8 million and 20 pedestrian and roadway departure projects totaling $25.3 million.

That includes just over $525,000 for sidewalks and crossings to improve pedestrian safety on U.S. 33 in the Village of Russells Point in Logan County.

Projects will be funded in State Fiscal Years 2027 through 2032.

Roadway safety improvements funded through this round of the grant program will include roundabouts, turn lanes, intersection upgrades, more visible signs and pavement markings, and high-visibility crosswalks, sidewalks, and bike lanes.

“Every single investment we make in our transportation network is an investment in the safety of the people who use it,” said Director Boratyn. “Dedicating millions of dollars to both state and local roads reflects our unwavering commitment to a data-driven approach that fixes problematic corridors and redesigns intersections to save lives.”

Ohio’s Highway Safety Improvement Program addresses road locations with a history of fatal or injury crashes where other safety improvements have not been effective.
