Kenton City Council conducted its 9th Regular Session of the year Monday evening.

Council passed a resolution on first reading after suspending the three-reading rule that tentatively awards a contract for construction of Water Treatment Plant Phase I improvements.

Safety Service Director Cindy Murray said the city has been awarded $3 million in grants and secured a $3 million dollar interest free loan to pay for much needed repairs that she said will extend the life of the plant for another 15 to 20 years.

Council passed a resolution approving an agreement for design and funding assistance of a water and sanitary sewer replacement project with OHM Advisors. Murray said this is for Franklin and Columbus Streets and will extend down to Leighton Street. The city has a total of 2 million dollars from the Army Corps of Engineers to fund both the water and sewer line projects.

Murray announced that the traffic light at the intersection of Detroit and Carrol Streets will updated today to remove the left green arrow light for southbound traffic on Detroit.

That means that both north and southbound traffic will have a solid green light at the same time.

She noted it is being done out of concern for safety for pedestrians crossing the street on the south side of the light, because while the northbound light may be red, southbound traffic could have a green light.

Murray also said the same thing will soon be done at the Columbus and Hester Streets intersection, which currently has a green arrow for traffic turning left from Columbus onto Hester.

That is no longer needed since the closure of the old Kenton High School building.

Fourth Ward Councilman Chad Miller stated the Citizens for Charter City Initiative will be meeting at the Kenton City Building this Thursday evening (May 14) at 7pm. He encouraged the second meeting in the public to attend and be informed or involved in the proposal. Miller stated that the Legislation Committee plans to present the proposal to the full council during the second meeting in June.

The next regular meeting will be moved to Tuesday May 26, because of Memorial Day on May 25.
