The CDC states that measles is a highly contagious disease that can cause serious and sometimes life-threatening complications, especially in young children. It spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

The CDC reports that up to 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people who are exposed to measles will become infected. Common symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes and a rash. Severe complications can include pneumonia, brain swelling and in rare cases death.

The CDC says that the MMR vaccine is the best protection against measles.

Some groups are at higher risk for severe complications from measles including:

  • Children younger than 5 years of age
  • Adults older than 20 years of age
  • Pregnant women
  • People with weakened immune systems, such as from leukemia or HIV infection
