Benjamin Logan Elementary’s youngest students are getting an important lesson in fire safety this week thanks to volunteers from Rushcreek Township Volunteer Fire & EMS.
During presentations held today and tomorrow, Pre-K, Kindergarten, and first-grade students are learning age-appropriate lessons designed to help them understand what to do during a fire or other emergency. Students are practicing Stop, Drop and Roll, learning about fire safety and seeing a firefighter dressed in full protective gear and breathing equipment.
The opportunity to see and hear a fully equipped firefighter is an especially important part of the presentation. Becoming familiar with the appearance and sounds of the equipment can help young children recognize that a firefighter is there to help them during an emergency.
For Assistant Chief Mike Overturf, educating Benjamin Logan students about fire safety has become a longstanding tradition. Overturf has been participating in these fire safety presentations for 32 years, helping generations of young students learn lessons that could one day save a life.
Joining Overturf for this year’s presentations are Chief Duane Van Buskirk, Assistant Chief D.C. Foulk, Assistant Squad Chief Shannon Stineman and EMT John Watkins.
The lessons also provide an opportunity for families to continue the conversation at home. Families are encouraged to test their smoke alarms, identify two ways out of each room and establish a designated outdoor meeting place where everyone should gather in an emergency.
Benjamin Logan Local Schools extends its appreciation to the volunteers of Rushcreek Township Volunteer Fire & EMS for giving their time to educate students and for their continued service to the community.
