Three Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers were given Distinguished Service Medallions on Thursday for demonstrating a sense of urgency and rendering aid.
Colonel Charles A. Jones presented them to Capitol Operations Sergeant Stephen E. Williams, Sergeant Darius M. Patterson and Trooper Brandon D. Todd.
On May 6, Trooper Todd was stationed at a security checkpoint at the Ohio Statehouse when he observed a 65-year-old woman experiencing a medical emergency.
He promptly retrieved a wheelchair for the woman while her family retrieved her oxygen tank.
Noticing that her condition was deteriorating, Trooper Todd immediately called for assistance.
Sergeants Williams and Patterson arrived and together they removed her from the wheelchair and placed her on the floor to begin CPR.
The AED Sergeant Williams retrieved was unable to detect a heartbeat, leading Sergeant Patterson to perform chest compressions until EMS arrived.
The EMS personnel took over the medical procedures and transported her to Grant Medical Center.
