Heartbeat of Hardin County has shared a powerful and emotional video on its Facebook page, highlighting the tragic story of a young man who fell victim to financial sextortion.

Executive Director Julie Zaring says this disturbing crime is happening to kids here as well, with offenders targeting local youth through online platforms and gaming systems.

Parents and caregivers are urged to take just four minutes to watch the video and become informed about the dangers children face online.

The video below contains references to suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, help is available. You are not alone. In the U.S., you can contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988, or visit 988lifeline.org for free and confidential support 24/7.

The FBI-Memphis Field Office issued a public warning in January of last year, about the rise in sextortion cases involving minors.

These crimes involve predators coercing children into sending sexually explicit material, then threatening to expose the content unless more is provided—or, in financially motivated cases, demanding payment through gift cards, mobile apps, or cryptocurrency.

Most victims are boys aged 14 to 17, but any child can be targeted. Offenders are often located outside the United States, primarily in West Africa and Southeast Asia.

These crimes can lead to devastating consequences, including self-harm and suicide. Between October 2021 and March 2023, federal authorities received over 13,000 reports involving more than 12,600 victims—leading to at least 20 suicides.

“The FBI has seen a horrific increase in reports of financial sextortion schemes,” said Special Agent in Charge Douglas DePodesta in January of 2024. “Protecting children is one of our top priorities. We need parents and caregivers to work with us to prevent this crime and support victims.”

If you suspect sextortion or financial sextortion, report it immediately to law enforcement.
