The Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office applied for and was awarded a Grant of nearly 20 million dollars to build a new jail facility.

An Architect has been hired, and they are in the process of choosing a contractor.

The new jail will go directly south of the existing jail.

It will be approximately 50 beds and will mainly house local offenders, thus reducing the cost of housing inmates at another facility.

The new jail will provide a safer environment for Corrections Officers and more room for resources.

Here is the complete release from Wyandot County Sheriff Todd Frey:

As you may be aware, the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office applied for and was awarded a Grant of nearly 20 million dollars to build a new facility. We have hired an Architect and in the process of choosing a contractor.

The new jail will go directly south of the existing jail, which we believe is the best financial decision moving forward and no, we are not tearing down the current jail. We purchased two homes directly south of the Sheriff’s Office and ultimately, we were reimbursed by the State for those purchases.

The jail will be approx. 50 beds (not 70) and mainly will house local offenders, thus reducing the cost of housing inmates at another facility. The current facility doesn’t accommodate for the challenges of Mental Health, Drug/Alcohol Withdraw, Classification etc.

The new jail will provide a safer environment for our Corrections Officers and more room for resources for the challenges that we face every day.
