Authorities are investigating the death of an off-duty Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper who was found unresponsive at a McComb residence Wednesday evening.

According to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called at approximately 6:27 p.m. on December 31 to a home in the 8000 block of County Road 53 following a report of an unconscious male. Fire and medical personnel also responded.

The individual was identified as the homeowner, Matthew Cook, who was pronounced deceased at the scene by Hancock County EMS. Investigators say preliminary information indicates the death appears to be self-induced. No foul play is suspected, and there is no threat to the public.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol later confirmed the individual was Sergeant Matthew Cook, an off-duty trooper assigned to the Defiance Post. The Patrol extended condolences to his family, the Findlay District, and the Patrol family.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation remains ongoing.
