Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International met recently at the Kenton Elks.

Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Intl. met at the Kenton Elks on May 2 at noon. Pres. Sandy Berry welcomed 10 members and guest Carol McKinley to the luncheon meeting. Berry thanked the committee of Shirley Spitler, Donna Myers, and Teresa Harris for the arrangements plus for the delicious food from Sue Buroker of the Elks.

A buffet meal of sloppy joe sandwiches, cole slaw, potato salad, beverages, and apple pie was enjoyed by all.

Following lunch, McKinley was introduced to present a slide show/video presentation about fairy gardens. She is a Hardin Co. Master Gardener. She showed many ideas to construct a fairy garden in containers and in one’s yard. She procures the miniature items from various sources such as New Leaf Garden Center, Blossom Gallery, Warehouse 13; as well as through Amazon. She has found that this is a fun activity to share with her grandchildren. It inspires the children to learn about plants as well as being creative within the art activity.

McKinley suggested that that all should read the 1951 book called “Miniature Gardens” by Anne Ashberry. Ashberry was a British engineer, gardener, and author as well as the first woman elected to the Society of Engineers in Great Britain. She designed a dishwasher and had a patent for a vegetable peeler. She was also famous for her nursery and designs. She was the first to give ideas of what to include in a fairy garden. One should put a door in a fairy garden. This attracts good fairies and helps bring magic. Succulent plants are used best in this process as they are small and give the effect of trees, bushes, and tiny flowers.

Pres. Berry led the group in thanking McKinley for her presentation. She then began the meeting by thanking the officers and members for their support. Teresa Harris’s minutes were approved. Correspondence was given from Kathy Tracy from the Blue Star Mothers. A card for Dorothy Blackburn was signed. Treasurer Elaine Hoover gave her report. She had sent $500 as a donation to help with postage for the Blue Star Mothers. It was filed for audit. Dues of $70 are due by June 30. A share/pin fine bag was distributed. Members signed up at each meeting through the year for a chance for free dues which was won by Ruth Ann Poling.

Donna Myers gave information for future state level meetings. On October 3, is the fall executive board meeting at Ohio University in Dublin. On April 30 to May 1, 2027 is the DKG Convention at Embassy Suites in Dublin. The DKG International Convention will be in Colorado this year. There are 3 training sessions for officers in Ohio and the nearest is in Sidney. Pres. Berry does make an effort to view zoom meetings once a month.

Pres. Berry gave best wishes for those with birthdays in May, June, and July. She also asked for ideas for future meetings. It was decided to have officers meet on Saturday, June 20, at 10 a.m. at Harris’s house to plan this coming year’s meetings.

Having no other items, the meeting was adjourned, and all were wished safe travels.
