A 67 year old man and his dog died in an apartment fire early this morning in Kenton.

According to information from the Kenton Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to Scioto Village Apartments on South Main Street at around 5am.

Upon arrival, heavy smoke was visible coming from the door of Apartment 38.

Firefighters made entry and found the victim, identified as Charles Cain, in a wheelchair in the kitchen.

He was taken from the apartment and transported by BKP Ambulance to Hardin Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The fire was contained to that apartment only, and no others units were affected.

Providing mutual assistance were fire departments from Mt. Victory and Belle Center.

In addition to BKP, the Kenton Police Department assisted at the scene.

Two officers from KPD attempted to use an extinguisher on the fire prior to firefighters arrival.

Fire investigators are looking at the possibility of portable heaters as the cause, but a final determination has not been made.

An agent from the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene, and the fire remains under investigation.
