Piqua Post investigating a two-vehicle injury crash on Interstate 75 in Miami County

PIQUA – The Piqua Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two vehicle injury crash. The crash occurred today, July 24, at approximately 8:09 a.m., on Interstate 75 northbound near mile marker 76 in Troy, Miami County.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2021 Volvo tractor-tanker trailer combination, operated by Donald Thomas, 61, Fairborn, and a 2011 Chevrolet HHR, operated by Michael Huff, 54, Laura, were traveling north on Interstate 75.

The Volvo was traveling in the middle lane, and the Chevrolet was traveling in the left lane. Where Interstate 75 merges from three lanes to two lanes, the Chevrolet merged from the left lane into the middle lane and struck the Volvo.

After contact, the Chevrolet traveled to the left and struck the median cable barrier. The Volvo traveled to the right and overturned, becoming separated from its tanker trailer. The Volvo came to rest on its side just off the right shoulder, and the tanker trailer
continued into a nearby cornfield before coming to rest.

While overturned, the tanker trailer leaked fuel into the field. Hazmat crews responded to assist with the
cleanup process.

Thomas was transported by ground ambulance to Upper Valley Medical Center with serious non-life-threatening injuries.

Huff and his passenger, Jade Huff, 35, Laura, were treated at the scene for possible injuries. He was found to be at fault for the crash and cited for a Turn Signal/Lane Change violation.

The crash remains under investigation by the Piqua Post.

The right lane of Interstate 75 northbound is currently closed (as of 11:45 am 07/24/26) due to the crash investigation and cleanup.

The motoring public should avoid the area and/or expect delays.

The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Troy Fire Department & EMS, Miami County Hazardous Materials Response Team, Miami County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Ohio Department of Transportation, Sandy’s Towing & Recovery, and Mantor Auto & Truck Repair.
