Ridgemont Local Schools shared an update with families and the community following an incident that occurred while K–2 students were returning from a field trip today.
K-2 students attended a performance of The Little Mermaid at the Holland Theatre in Bellefontaine. While returning to school, Ridgemont bus drivers noticed what appeared to be a house with smoke coming from the roof area. Acting quickly, they stopped and alerted the occupants.
A small group of bus drivers and teachers assisted in helping the individuals exit the home safely. At the time, the fire was not actively raging, and all occupants were able to get out without injury.
Officials stated they have since reminded staff to prioritize their own safety and follow proper emergency procedures in the future, but also want to commend them for their quick thinking and concern for human life.
Once those individuals were safely outside, the buses continued on their route. Although students observed smoke coming from the residence, they remained supervised throughout the situation and were never in any danger.
Officials felt it was important to communicate transparently with the community and reassure everyone that all students and staff are safe.
Anyone with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact the school.
