Another scam was reported in the region.
This one was in Marion County, where a resident received a check in the mail Monday.
The check was for $2300 and was part of a secret shopper program. The person receiving the check was to cash it and keep $350. The remaining amount was to be used to purchase Walmart gift cards. They were then supposed to send an email or text message with pictures of gift cards, which is how the scammer get card numbers which they use to make purchases.
The fraudulent check will then bounce, leaving the person who cashed it responsible for the $2300.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone receiving such a check to throw it away and not fall for the scam.
