An open competitive examination for the position of police officer in the City of Upper Sandusky, Ohio is announced by the Civil Service Commission to be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023 beginning at 9:00 a.m. at a location to be determined in Upper Sandusky, Ohio 43351. Applicants will be notified of the exam location. Check-in for the exam begins at 8:30 a.m. The carrying of firearms is not permitted.
The requirements for applicants are as follows:
Must be twenty-one (21) years of age.
No person is eligible to receive an original appointment when he or she is thirty- five (35) years of age or older; unless (a.) Transferring from a full-time paid police position with another Police Department; or (b.) Having been a member of the City’s Auxiliary Police Division for a minimum of six (6) months and must be under the age of forty (40).
Must be a high school graduate; and (a.) Must be a graduate of an Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Council certified police academy; or (b.) Must have been employed as a sworn police officer having full police officer authority in the State of Ohio within the past twelve (12) months. The requirements for appointment are as follows:
Must have successfully passed the civil service exam;
Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license at the time of appointment;
Must have no criminal record other than minor traffic violations, and no more than four (4) BMV points in the last two (2) years;
Must have three (3) references;
Must be fingerprinted for purposes of a criminal background investigation;
Must pass a medical examination and drug screen by the physician designated by the City, certifying that the applicant is free of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases and show that he or she meets the physical requirements necessary to perform the duties of a police officer in the City of Upper Sandusky, Ohio;
If required by the City, must submit to a psychological examination by a psychologist designated by the City;
If required by the City, must submit to a polygraph examination by a polygraphist designated by the City;
Must execute and deliver an Authorization to Release Information form for purposes of conducting a background investigation.
Bonus Test Credit
Twenty percent (20%) credit will be added to a passing civil service examination score for past military experience. Applicant must attach a copy of DD214 Discharge Form with completed application for credit; or
Five percent (5%) credit added to a passing civil service examination for a current Upper Sandusky Police Auxiliary Officer. Probationary Period and Wages
The Upper Sandusky Police Department is now accepting lateral transfers. Prior full-time law enforcement experience within the State of Ohio will be credited for pay scale placement. Current wages for the position start at $19.55 and go up to $24.98. All new police officers must serve a probationary period and will be paid according to the then existing Agreement between the City of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, and the International Union of Police Associations AFL-CIO Local 32.
