Defiance, Ohio – More than 200 Scouts and adult volunteers from across Northwest Ohio gathered at Camp Lakota in Defiance on Saturday, January 24, for the Black Swamp Area Council Klondike Derby, a signature winter Scouting event that challenges youth to demonstrate teamwork, leadership, and outdoor skills in cold‑weather conditions.
This year’s Klondike Derby featured 15 patrol sleds, each crewed by Scouts working together to navigate the course and complete a series of skill‑based challenges inspired by the historic Klondike Gold Rush. From problem‑solving and navigation to first aid and fire‑building, Scouts put their training to the test throughout the day.
“The Klondike Derby is one of the best examples of Scouting in action,” said Marc Kogan, Scout Executive for the Black Swamp Area Council. “Scouts learn perseverance, teamwork, and self‑reliance, all while having fun outdoors in the winter. We are incredibly proud of every Scout and volunteer who participated.”
The 2026 event was chaired by volunteer leader Jenny Graham, whose leadership and dedication helped ensure a safe, well‑organized, and memorable experience for all participants.

A highlight of the day was the required outdoor cooking challenge, where patrols prepared a hot meal on the trail using low‑impact cooking methods. Afterward, Scouts gathered at Cooper Lodge with the Keith Hubbard Dining Hall to warm up and enjoy lunch together, reinforcing fellowship and camaraderie after a full morning of outdoor activity.
“The use of Cooper Lodge allowed Scouts to reflect on their accomplishments, share stories, and recharge before finishing the day’s events,” Kogan added. “It is wonderful to see our camp facilities supporting year‑round Scouting programs.”

The Klondike Derby is part of the Black Swamp Area Council’s ongoing commitment to providing meaningful outdoor experiences that build character, leadership, and life skills in youth. Events like this would not be possible without the support of dedicated volunteers, leaders, and families who make Scouting thrive in our communities.
