Laughter echoed through the trees and bright smiles lit up every corner of the grounds as the Hardin County Board of Developmental Disabilities (DD) hosted its annual summer camp for children who often struggle to fit in elsewhere. More than just a week of fun, the camp serves as a beacon of inclusion, connection, and joy for dozens of children with developmental disabilities.

The camp, which ran throughout July, is specifically designed to meet the diverse needs of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, creating a supportive and fully inclusive environment where every child is welcomed, valued, and empowered. From the layout of the activities to the training of staff and volunteers, every detail is thoughtfully crafted to ensure accessibility, comfort, and meaningful engagement for campers of all abilities.

Campers took part in a wide variety of activities tailored to different interests and sensory needs from arts and crafts and music therapy to sensory-friendly games and imaginative themed dress-up days. These experiences are more than just play; they are structured to promote communication skills, encourage social interaction, and build confidence in a safe and accepting space.

This year’s camp featured exciting field trips throughout the Kenton area, further expanding opportunities for inclusive community participation. On July 17, the group visited the Kenton Bowling Alley for two full games and a refreshing drink. On July 21, campers explored the Chad Roof Inclusive Playground — a fully accessible, adaptive play space designed for children of all physical abilities — where lunch was provided for all. Then, on July 23, the group headed to the Kenton Movie Theater for a special showing of The Smurfs, complete with popcorn and drinks.

Adding to the excitement, Yoder Contracting generously surprised campers and staff with Dairy Queen Blizzards, a much-appreciated cool treat on a hot summer day.

These memorable adventures and moments of connection were made possible through the generosity of local sponsors. The Hardin County Board of DD extends heartfelt thanks to Large’s Exhaust & Brakes, Quest Federal Credit Union, Hensel Ready Mix, Pizza Hut, and Yoder Contracting for their commitment to building an inclusive and supportive community.

“We work hard to create a camp experience that every camper looks forward to all year long,” said Craig Ludwig, Director of the Hardin County DD Summer Camp. “Here, everyone is celebrated for who they are. It’s about making memories, building confidence, and feeling accepted.”

A highlight of the week was the “Talent and Kindness Show,” where campers had the opportunity to showcase their unique gifts — from dancing and singing to storytelling and acts of kindness. For many families, the camp is life-changing. “This camp is a blessing,” shared one parent. “My child came home every day beaming with pride.”

Another parent added, “My son talks about camp year-round. He asks me every month if he’ll get to go back next summer. It’s that special to him.”

The camp’s compassionate staff and volunteers play a vital role in creating an experience that embraces each child’s individuality. Their efforts reflect the mission of the Hardin County Board of DD: to promote inclusion, ability, and independence for all. The inclusive summer camp is one of many ways the Board works to ensure children with disabilities are not just accommodated but truly included and celebrated in every part of community life.

As the summer winds down, the joy and friendships created at camp will last a lifetime. The Hardin County Board of DD relies on grant funding to support this annual camp. It is the hope of the Board of DD to continue to secure grant funding or support from individual community donors to continue offering this program in the future. With continued investment, the Summer Camp can grow, evolve, and remain a cherished experience for Hardin County families for years to come.
