He doesn’t know the exact year, but Gerald “Jerry” Althauser said it’s been since the early 80’s that the Althauser family has operated a booth at the fair selling their locally made honey.
They are back again this year and Althauser talks about his operation, “We keep a few bees and make a lot of beeswax candles and sell honey. We have a pumpkin patch at home where you pick pumpkins in the fall, which is coming up pretty quick.”
Althauser added that he believes the idea that locally made honey is better for you, “First of all, it’s probably better tasting because it’s what you’re used to, but secondly there is a theory that it will help with allergies because the bees are visiting the same plants that you’re allergic to, and so they’re getting nectar and they’re getting pollen from those plants, and when you eat that honey, it’s like getting a real small allergy shot.”
For roughly the 40th fair, Althauser Honey is located in the Machinery Building.
The fair runs through this Sunday at the fairgrounds in Kenton.
The highlight in the grandstand tonight is Harness Racing starting at 7.
