(UPDATE) Plane Crash Kills Arizona Man in Union County

One person was killed in a plane crash that occurred Sunday evening in Union County.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office reports that the crash occurred in a farm field along U.S. Route 42. The plane skidded across the road and struck a utility pole, which brought down power lines resulting in a power outage in the area.

A witness said he saw a plane as he was driving that was coming down close to a quarry on the south side of Watkins Road. He said the place then shot back up quickly, and he lost sight of it due to the snow.

The plane was described as a Cessna 421 twin engine that was totally destroyed.

Columbus media outlets said the plane was travelling from Dayton to Delaware County when it crashed in Union County.

Investigators have identified the deceased pilot as 44-year-old Matthew A. Hayden, of Phoenix, Arizona.

The cause is unknown, but it was snowing and overcast at the time.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Transportation Board are investigating.

U.S. 42 from Delaware County to U.S. 33 was closed until early this morning due to the crash.
