The process to raze the old Surplus Building in downtown Kenton has started.

City Law Director John Schwemer said the city is following through with demolishing the building before the downtown revitalization project is completed.

Owner Dave Rigdon was given a week to hire a contractor on his own, otherwise the city would have to act.

City Council members approved an ordinance to appropriate the funds needed, and a quote of $204,000 was received.

Contractors were on site today (Tuesday May 20) and began the process of removing asbestos and environmental hazards which will be placed in a container, covered and taken to a special disposal site per EPA regulations.

The two buildings to the south of the Surplus Building, including the former Bennett’s Video store have already been demolished.

Schwemer said most likely the Surplus Building itself won’t be razed until this Saturday May 24.

As pointed out at last week’s council meeting, the city will assess a lien on the property and seek judgement against Rigdon for the amount and seek collection through other properties.

Schwemer noted that would be a separate lawsuit that he would file on behalf of the city to recoup the city’s money.
