NWS Releases Special Weather Statement Involving Cold Air Funnels; Issues Flood Watch

Special Weather Statement from National Weather Service for Hardin-Mercer-Auglaize-Darke-Shelby-Logan–Union-Delaware-Miami-Champaign-Clark-Madison-Franklin-Licking.

Including the cities of Kenton, Ada, Celina, Coldwater, Wapakoneta, St. Marys, New Bremen, Minster, Greenville, Sidney, Bellefontaine, Marysville, Delaware, Troy, Piqua, Tipp City, Urbana, Springfield, London, West Jefferson, Plain City, Downtown Columbus, and Newark

Showers and thunderstorms will be capable of producing brief cold air funnels this afternoon and evening. Several funnel clouds have already been spotted across west-central Ohio, with this feature potentially moving into central Ohio over the coming hours. Keep in mind, the majority of these funnels will not reach the ground, but if they do, gusty winds and minor damage may occur.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch in effect from 4p this (Wednesday) afternoon through Thursday morning.

• WHAT…Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.
• WHERE…the following counties in Ohio:

Auglaize, Champaign, Clark, Darke, Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Hardin, Hocking, Licking, Logan, Madison, Mercer, Miami, Montgomery, Pickaway, Preble, Shelby and Union.

• WHEN…From 4 PM EDT this afternoon through Thursday morning.
• IMPACTS…Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

A complex of storms will develop later this afternoon and continue overnight. Repeated rounds of storms, combined with the extremely wet soil conditions will increase the risk for flash flooding later this evening into the overnight hours.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

People in the watch area should keep an eye on the weather and be prepared for immediate action should heavy rains and flooding occur or a Flash Flood Warning be issued. Avoid low-lying areas and be careful when approaching highway dips and underpasses.
