Mary Belle Schlatter, age 99, of Forest and, more recently, of Kenton, died Sat. Jan. 30, 2021, at Hardin Memorial Hospital, Kenton. She was born July 3, 1921 in Forest to the late Harry & Lulu (Inman) Peart. She married Kenneth E. Schlatter Sr. on Nov. 21, 1942 and he passed Apr. 2, 2010. Kenton City Council's regular session Monday night saw its greatest public attendance in months--if only for a few minutes. Riverdale High School has been forced to postpone an upcoming boys’ basketball game. The Falcons’ upcoming tilt against Cory-Rawson has been moved from Friday, January 22, to Saturday, January 23, because of coronavirus issues at Cory-Rawson. Marion County residents are to remain aware of a telephone scam which has affected area residents. Per the advisory on the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, a caller using spoofed numbers in the 740 area code may claim to be from the Social Security Administration Investigative Unit and ask victims to press one to speak to a representative. Wapakoneta High School Mourns Car-Crash Victims

Wapakoneta High School will provide support to students affected by the crash which claimed the life of Layla Yoakam and critically injured Katelyn Rose. Counselors and therapy dogs will be available throughout Tuesday, and group sessions will be held during 11th-grade English classes. A Facebook post from Wapakoneta City Schools thanks their Critical Incident Stress Management team for their services at this time.

ONU Community Remaining Mindful of Pandemic

As Ohio Northern University students, staff, and faculty begin their spring semester tomorrow, they are urged to remember their “Polar Pledge” to keep their community safe amid the pandemic. Marion Police Investigate Drive-Thru Incident

Marion Police continue to investigate an incident which occurred at Dino’s Drive Thru last week. Mitch Hooper at the Marion Star reports potential charges against the suspect include breaking and entering, criminal damaging, and endangering. $417 in cash was reported stolen from the location, and damages to a security-system hard drive totaled two-thousand dollars.

Marion County Children Returning to Classrooms

School districts across Marion County are returning to in-person learning in the coming days. Micah Walker at the Marion Star reports Marion City and River Valley School Districts will begin a hybrid format tomorrow, with Marion City Superintendent Ron Iarussi hoping the introduction of the coronavirus vaccine to school employees beginning February 1 will mean a fully in-person schedule for the final quarter of the school year. With inclement weather affecting Kenton’s roads, city management advises residents of certain information which should improve area traffic safety: At this time, the City of Kenton’s capabilities extend only as far as applying salt to the roads. Salt is first applied to Main, Detroit, Franklin, and Columbus Streets, followed by the side streets around the schools, then side-street intersections and hills.
